Augmented reality (AR) is an interactive experience which involves a real-world environment enhanced by computer-generated imagery, audio and interaction.
In this video, PhD scholar Ben Rhodes discusses augmented reality in relation to the hugely popular mobile game Pokemon Go. In this game, augmented reality is used to position the Pokemon in real-world situations that require the players to visit so they can “catch them all.” As you will hear, this has lead to many adventures and unexpected opportunities for play and connection for Ben.
Have you tried Pokemon Go or another Augmented Reality experience? What did you make of it? Perhaps you could ask any children and young people you work with whether they played Pokemon Go and share their responses? Do you think Augmented Reality will play an important role in videogame developments?
