3.11 Developing Games - a Creative Process
From Matty Phillips
Coding skills and technical knowhow are key components of videogame design but they must sit alongside the primary force, which is creativity.
In this video, we hear from Greg Lobanov, who is an American indie game designer, about what creative pursuits he considers to be most important when it comes to designing and building videogames.
Indie game designers are typically people who create games on their own or in very small teams, without any major support from games companies. They frequently distribute their games online via publishing partners and are released on online games shops such as Steam or Itch.IO.
Greg also discusses how he built creative missions and ambitions into his game Chicory: A Colorful Tale to encourage further artistic behaviour in players.
How do you think creativity sits alongside the process of gamebuilding and how can it inform the mechanisms of a game?
