In the previous video, Adam played a basic outline of melody and chords for a version of My Town. In this video, we head to Pig Farm Studios in Sheffield to see how a song can take shape from these basic ingredients, by adding different musical parts.
We understand that not everyone has access to other musicians or to a recording studio, but in songwriting it can be valuable to hear the potential of a simple idea. This song was written to be simple in it’s basic ingredients of harmony and melody to demonstrate how interest can be added by composing an arrangement. You may be able to try this for yourself by using music software to add different lines to your arrangement, and you can often download instrumental samples off the internet.
As you listen to the final performance, pay attention to the way that the arrangement of the song comprises different lines within a texture, thinking back to those five musical elements that we introduced in the early videos; melody, rhythm, harmony, metre and key.
