Folk singer, guitarist and songwriter, Martin Simpson, worked alongside learners to write his own version of My Town. We’ll be checking in with him each playlist for inspiration and guidance on the songwriting process.
Martin has been a solo recording artist for almost 40 years, having released 19 studio and two live albums in that time. He has been nominated 23 times in the 11 years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including nine times consecutively as Artist of The Year, which he has won twice. His album Prodigal Son was named Album of the Year in 2008 and a song from that album, Never Any Good was named Best Original Song of the year.
In this video Martin reads through the lyrics for the first time, paying attention to the rhythmic qualities of the text. He also starts to play around with the words, omitting lines that he doesn’t want to use. Listen out for Martin’s advice on establishing an emotional connection with the lyrics by understanding the emotional content of the words.
