Previously, we saw Martin come up with a melodic shape and form for the verses of My Town. This week, he turns his attention to the refrain.
In this video, Martin plays around with chord progressions to come up with an idea for the refrain of the song. A refrain is a repeated section of lyrics that follows each verse. So in My Town, this would be “I’m walking this street heading home, leaving silent footprints in the rain”.
Notice how he introduces a sense of contrast to the verses by beginning the refrain on a different chord. This is something we’ll start to look at next week when we consider how using a song form can help you find a balance between repeating ideas and introducing new, contrasting ones.
