In this video, Martin explores how the lyrics may influence his ideas for a melody and uses his voice to play around with some options - this is a songwriting tool that we all have. He talks about many of the concepts that are coming up next week, such as melodic form (for example, where he talks about giving the song an ABAB structure), so don’t worry if this all sounds a bit confusing right now. Importantly, Martin is demonstrating how understanding the rhythmic quality of a song can be an important segue on to the next step of songwriting - writing an effective melody.
