Most popular songs have two main sections-verses and a contrasting section known as a refrain or chorus. In this video, Adam talks about these techniques and explains how they might be applied to My Town. In each version of the lyrics for My Town there is a short repeating section with the lines “‘I’m walking this street heading home, Leaving silent footsteps in the rain’”. This is an obvious place to try out using a chorus or refrain, by introducing variety or contrast in the melody that will set this apart from the music of the verse.
In the video, Adam demonstrates how to achieve this sense of contrast using a piano ballad version of My Town as an example.
