A melody is a series of notes or pitches often (but by no means always) taken from a particular scale or key. In this video, Adam is joined by singer Stephanie Gilroy to introduce these concepts and demonstrate how they can be used to compose simple melodies.
Once you have watched the video, why not have a go at following Adam’s simple process? Complete the following steps to come up with your own simple melody:
- Choose a scale such as major, minor or modal (in the video, Adam uses the major scale)
- Select a sequence of notes from this scale (Adam uses notes 1, 5, 2, 6 and then 4, 2, 3, 1)
- Apply a sense of time or rhythm to these notes by making some notes long and others short
- Group the notes into short phrases
