In this video, filmed in the High Great Chamber at Hardwick Hall, Tom explains that touring was a regular feature of life for Elizabethan playing companies, including those based in London.
They performed in a wide variety of venues, in provincial towns and in great houses such as Hardwick Hall. One major company to visit Hardwick was the Queen’s Men, who by the late 1590s would have been able to perform in the High Great Chamber.
