In this video, Professor Joanna Shapland discusses some of the challenges that face the development of restorative justice and the elements that would go into the creation of a good restorative justice scheme.
Restorative justice is still relatively new in a lot of countries and faces a number of challenges, including a lack of experienced facilitators and insufficient accountability processes for when something goes wrong.
So what would make a good restorative justice scheme? In this video, Joanna suggests the following key elements:
- A wide enough area to refer sufficient cases
- A safe, community-based facility to host the meetings
- Proper administrative systems so that cases can be tracked
- Access to RJ at all stages of the criminal justice process
- Sufficient support for those involved
