When a crime occurs, the people it affects have to decide what to do. It can take victims some time to work out what has happened and what they will do about it. In particular, they need to decide whether they will report the crime to the police, and there are various considerations they may have in mind as to whether they will report it.
In this video, we’ll meet the victims of two fairly typical offences. Over the next few steps, we’ll follow their decision whether to report the crime and look at the International Crime Victims Survey (ICVS) to see what it can tell us about the extent to which victims involve the police and the criminal justice system.
