Architects and designers can influence the way that people live and interact and also influence their behaviour by creating pleasant buildings and environments. However, what happens when we are talking about prisons? They must be designed to ensure that inmates remain deprived of freedom. Does that mean deprived of human friendly conditions? Studies have demonstrated that artificial lighting has an important influence on behaviour, so should we be changing the way that prisons are illuminated?
