The topic sentence - a general statement that states the main idea
Explanation or Definition - clarifies any difficult or unclear terms in the topic sentence
Evidence - supports or develops the main ideas with facts, examples, experiments etc
Comment - supports or develops the evidence with more information, including opposing or contrasting points to broaden or develop the discussion - where appropriate mention other evidence to widen discussion
Concluding sentence - states the implications/consequences of the paragraph, shows development of the argument, links back to topic sentence and links forward to the main idea of the next paragraph
