- Maths anxiety is a particular type of anxiety that affects a person’s reasoning ability when confronted with mathematics.
- It usually starts from a bad experience or experiences with maths in the past. This can lead to what is known as the maths avoidance cycle where this negative experience leads to maths avoidance and procrastination, which in turn leads to poor preparation resulting in poor maths performance and another negative experience and the whole thing starts again.
- However the cycle can be broken: be aware that you are anxious and replace negative thoughts with positive ones, understand the relevance of maths or stats to what you are doing, look beyond your lecture notes for alternative sources of help such as using MASH the Maths and Stats Help centre and finally don’t avoid doing the maths.
