University of Sheffield astrophysics student Gillian Finnerty has been selected as one of the final 1,058 candidates vying for a place on the one-way Mars One mission - a project to establish the first human settlement on Mars in 2023.

We asked Gillian about her application, why she feels Mars One is such an important project and how she has been inspired by University of Sheffield alumnus and first Briton in space, Helen Sharman.
