2019 marks 40 years since SEAS began teaching Korean Studies. To celebrate our anniversary we commissioned two giant tradition Korean Totem Pole carvings.
Created by artist Jinsik Kim, these Totem Poles now stand as
a permanent feature on our campus.
Korean Totem Poles (Jangseung) were used traditionally to
protect villages from evil spirits. Today, they are still used for this purpose, plus to promote tourist sites, used for social activism, to express resistance against
political or environmental issues and as the subject of art.
