Living with humans, living with nature

Living with humans, living with nature

How do you best live with elephants or wolves? All over the world, people and nature live together, and their coexistence can be positive – or not so positive. Different relationships connect humans with all parts of the nonhuman, natural world. This channel shares videos from the research storytelling evening 'Living with humans, living with nature' held in September 2022 at Tamper Sellers Wheel, Sheffield, UK. PhD, post-doctoral and other researchers shared their experiences of investigating diverse nature-human interactions in places such as Chile, Spain or Tanzania. Through 10-minute research storytelling, they revealed how these relationships are shaped by an intricate interplay of ecology, society, economy, politics and history. Drawing on their training in natural and social sciences, they explored formal, Indigenous and local knowledges about living together, and how their work has changed their thinking about how nature and people can thrive together.

Funding for the event came from the Belmont Forum through the CONVIVA - convivial ('living with') conservation research project (conviva-research.com). The event was co-organised by the University of Sheffield's Institute for Global Sustainable Development and the University of York's Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre. Research storytelling training was led by professional storyteller Tim Ralphs.
